National Police Service Commission wants the National Hospital Insurance Fund, now Social Health Authority (SHA) to fast-track the settlement of all outstanding claims of police officers injured while on duty. In his submission to the Senate Standing Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations, Chairperson Eliud Kinuthia, CBS called for the indulgence of the committee to expedite the process.
He said the subjection of injured persons for a second medical assessment by NHIF after determination by Director of Occupational Safety and Health Services (DOSH), is against the contractual agreement that acknowledge DOSH as the final assessor. The Chairperson further expressed concern over exemption of NHIF from regulation by Insurance Regulatory Authority saying it has left the National Police Service exposed to mismanagement by NHIF.
A total of 1,756 claims arising from various services that is KPS, APS and DCI were submitted to NHIF between 2021 to 2022 out of which only 937 were settled. Under the contract, NHIF is expected to settle the assessed claims within 90 days as stipulated by the Work Injury Benefits Act.
The Chairperson was accompanied by the Vice chairperson Dr. Alice Otwala, Commissioners; John Ole Moyaki, Eusebius Laibuta, Edwin Cheluget and CEO Peter Leley.
