Commission lauds the establishment of NGAPU

The National Police Service Commission took part in the launch of the National Government Administration Police Unit (NGAPU) in Kwale County. The event also marked the unveiling of the Administration Police Service Roadmap for Service Delivery Revitalization and the official conclusion of the Administration Police Service Senior Commanders Conference.

Commission Chairperson, Mr. Eliud Kinuthia, CBS, hailed the establishment of NGAPU as a crucial step in strengthening support for the National Government Administration. He reiterated the Commission’s commitment to facilitating the unit’s full operationalization, highlighting the successful transfer of 6,000 officers and plans to expand the unit by an additional 19,500 officers.

Presiding over the event, Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, Hon. Kipchumba Murkomen, commended the Administration Police Service for its vital role in safeguarding Kenya’s borders and addressing security challenges such as banditry and cattle rustling. Inspector General Douglas Kanja emphasized that the launch of NGAPU underscores the National Police Service’s dedication to excellence in service delivery.

Established under Section 10 (h) of the National Police Service Act, 2011, NGAPU is tasked with enhancing security and governance across Kenya. The specialized unit will support the National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) in high-risk operations, collaborate with other security agencies, and contribute to conflict resolution and peace-building efforts.
The overall command and discipline of officers in the unit will be under the Inspector General of the National Police Service (NPS), in accordance with Section 8(a) of the National Police Service Act, 2011. The Deputy Inspector General for the Administration Police Service (APS) will oversee the unit’s internal operations and accountability.

The Chairperson was accompanied by Commissioner Edwin Cheluget and Chief Executive Officer Peter Leley.
