The National Police Service Commission this morning appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on Administration and Internal Security to submit on proposed amendments to the National Police Service Commission Act. The Amendment bill, sponsored by Suna West Constituency Member of Parliament Peter Masara, seeks to enhance the mandate of the Commission by giving it express authority to address mental health and wellbeing of police officers.
Commission Chief Executive Officer Peter Leley in his presentation welcomed the proposals and noted that the Bill comes at a critical time when the Commission is implementing counselling and psychosocial support to officers through a policy formulated in 2018. He said the proposed amendment will strengthen the existing framework by ensuring mental and well-being of officers in the service.
The National Police Service, Independent Policing Oversight Authority, State Department for Internal Security and National Administration and National Association of Retired Police Officers-Kenya were among stakeholders who gave their input on the amendments.
