Swearing-In of Inspector General of Police
Douglas Kanja was this morning sworn-in as the Inspector General of Police and Commissioner of the National Police Service Commission in a ceremony presided over by the Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court of Kenya Hon. Martha Koome. Commission Vice Chairperson Dr. Alice Otwala expressed confidence in Kanja citing his rich experience in the security sector. Dr. Otwala said his appointment comes at critical time when the sector is keen on implementing reforms that are aimed at bringing a paradigm shift in the National Police Service.
In his maiden speech, the new Inspector General admitted the heavy task before him pledging to work closely with all stakeholders to reform the service to be fully responsive and accountable to the public.
The Chief Justice called on the IG to strengthen inter-agency collaborations saying the security sector plays a critical role in the criminal justice system. Koome also emphasized on the need to uphold the rule of law adding that police officers should be at the forefront in defending the constitution.
